Adriatic sea shark tagging programe
Posted by andrej
The first satelite shark tagging tagging program runned by Sharklab Adria, with main goal to better understand shark movemants and migrations in Adriatic and Meditteranean sea.Exclusive project informations !
Tagging species is an extremely efficient way of collecting vast amounts of data, both over a large period of time and short period of time. There are many different tagging methods, all depending on the source of data desired as well as the species environment and size. M-tags (photo 1), Roto tags (photo 2) and Spaghetti tags are an efficient way of collecting continuous data for a long period of time. Most of these tags are composed of plastic, and positioned at the base of the dorsal fin of a shark. These conventional tags display an ID number as well as a contact number. Sharks and rays of Neum bay

Actual check-list of sharks and rays that inhabit in the marine part of Bosnia and Herzegovina have been published in the Academy of Science nad Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina.Symposium Ecosystems, 2011 at ANUBIH (16th of June, 2011.)
The assessment and exploration of the cartilaginous fish found within the waters of Bosnia and Herzegovina has always been sporadic. The actual list of cartilaginous fish of B&H is represented in a revision of Soljan, 1980. (Hamzić & Lelo, 2007 - 2009). This list contains 11 confirmed species. In the waters of Adriatic sea it is believed that 72 species of cartilaginous fish (Gajić, 2011) are present either as permanent residents or temporary visitors. Of these 72 species within the Adriatic sea bordering Bosnia and Herzegovina it is believed that only cartilaginous fish of the subclass Elasmobranch (Bonaparte, 1838 (sharks, skates and rays) are present, while currently no evidence is available to show that any representative of the Holocephali subclass is present, due to research depth limitations. On the basis of continuing research (Gajić 2008 - 2011) being conducted by the European based scientific organisation, Sharklab and the analysis of available information on biodiversity and biology of cartilaginous fish of the Adriatic sea, it is only possible to confirm the presence of 12 species with a further 20 species likely to be present, expected (possible species). The authors suggest that Neum Bay represents only a micro location with insufficient size to be truly representative of the whole Adriatic Sea. The presence in this region of specific habitats known to be ideal for certain species of sharks leads the authors to believe that there is a high probability that some individuals will live within this area permanently. As a factor for adding certain species to the list, whose presence is still not confirmed in the waters of B&H, the authors have taken habitat type into account which is known to be a preferred by a number of given species. Due to a lack of data on the diversity of cartilaginous fish of Neum Bay, authors believe that within this area it is necessary to start a series of scientific and research expeditions. Through these research projects and bio-monitoring it is hoped to determine the actual number of cartilaginous fish which are constantly or periodically present in marine part of our state.
"Sharks & Rays" in National Museum

Conservational ehxibition of cartilaginous fish in the National museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina; Ceremonial opening on 14th of May at 17 o`clock.
The exhibition "Sharks and rays" is the main event of Department for natural sicences of National museum of BIH for European Night of Museums 2011. European Night of Museums is traditional event ran by French Ministry of culture. With main objective to rise awareness and contribute to better understanding of cartilaginous fish, exhibition gives an unique opportunity to see spiny dogfish, porbeagle shark, cat sharks, smoothound, hammerhead and more. Those taxidermies origin from late XIX and begining of XX century. Nowadays, most of those sharks are criticly endangered and on the brink of excition. Besides the exhibition, Sharklab`s research officer Andrej Gajić together with her team run educational workshops for students of High Schools in canton of Sarajevo. It is very important to notice that all animals are founded dead, not killed. This event show great success in shark conservation, and most people said that we have chabged ther perception of sharks, and that they realise how much help they need, how magnificent and endangered they actualy are.
